Pudong Airport Visa-Free Transit - 24-Hour and 240-Hour Rules

Shanghai Pudong is one of the easiest Chinese airports for a visa-free layover, and since the transit rules were extended to 240 hours it can be a ten-day stop rather than a night. The details matter, because every hotel in this guide, including the one inside Terminal 2, is on the landside of immigration. This page sets out the rules as they stood on the date shown below; they change, and the immigration desk at Pudong has the final word.

The 24-hour rule

Passengers of most nationalities transiting through Pudong to a third country within 24 hours do not need a visa and may leave the airport, as long as they hold a confirmed onward ticket and stay within the time. Airlines apply it at check-in, so have the onward ticket ready. Twenty-four hours is enough for a night in an airport hotel or an evening on the Bund, but not for a hotel on the far side of the city with an early flight back.

The 240-hour rule

The 240-hour visa-free transit policy allows citizens of the listed countries, 57 at the time of writing after the August 2026 expansion, to stay in China for up to 240 hours (ten days) when transiting to a third country or region. The conditions:

Your onward ticket must be to a country or region different from the one you arrived from, with a departure within the 240 hours. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan count as separate regions for this purpose.
The clock starts at midnight after the day of entry, so an evening arrival loses nothing.
Entry and exit can be at any of the listed ports, and travel across the permitted provinces and cities is allowed, which covers Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and beyond.
You apply on arrival: complete an arrival card, present passport and onward ticket at the dedicated 240-hour transit desk in the arrivals hall before the regular immigration counters, and receive a temporary entry permit stamped in your passport.

Visa-free entry without transiting

Separately from transit rules, China has extended unilateral visa-free entry of up to 30 days to citizens of many European, Asian, Latin American and Oceanian countries, and shorter mutual arrangements exist with others. If your passport qualifies you do not need an onward ticket to a third country at all. The lists are revised often; check the Chinese embassy or the National Immigration Administration before you fly.

What this means for a hotel stay

Pudong has no hotel on the airside of immigration. The Aerotel Shanghai is inside Terminal 2 but before security, so you must enter China to reach it; the same applies to the walk-in hotels on Yingbin Avenue and the shuttle hotels.
