Pudong Airport Buses, Taxis and Ride-Hailing: Fares, Night Services and Pick-Up Points
Trains are the fast way out of Pudong, but buses and taxis cover the hours and the districts the trains do not, and they take luggage without stairs. Airport bus lines
Airport buses leave from the bus stands outside the arrivals halls of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, with a ticket office and departure boards at each. The network has included Line 1 to Hongqiao Airport, Line 2 to Jing’an Temple via the city centre, and Lines 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 to Shanghai railway station, Shanghai South railway station, the Xujiahui and Yangpu districts and other hubs, plus a Pudong Hub Line. Fares run from 8 to 34 yuan depending on distance, and buses leave every 15 to 45 minutes from about 6:30 am until roughly 45 minutes after the last arrival; from the city to the airport, services run from about 5:00 am to 9:30 pm.
Journey times depend on traffic: an hour to Jing’an Temple in the evening rush can become 90 minutes. The advantage over the metro is a seat, a luggage hold and no change at Guanglan Road.
The night bus
When the last Maglev has gone at 9:30 pm and the metro stops around 10:00 pm, the airport night bus links Pudong with Hongqiao Airport through the night, and a night line into the city has run on the Line 2 route. Timetables change; check the boards at the bus stands on arrival. A taxi is the reliable fallback.
Taxis
Taxi ranks are outside the arrivals halls on the ground floor of both terminals, with marshals and a queue that moves quickly except at peak evening arrival banks. Meters start at 16 yuan by day; the Bund or People’s Square is 150 to 200 yuan and the ride 45 to 60 minutes, with a night surcharge after 11:00 pm that pushes the same trip to 180 to 250 yuan. Highway tolls of 15 to 20 yuan are added to the meter. Have the destination written in Chinese or shown on a map; drivers rarely speak English. Refuse anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a car.
The Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Shanghai Pudong Airport and the Chuansha hotels are 20 to 60 yuan by taxi, useful if you miss a shuttle.
Ride-hailing
DiDi is the main app and works well at Pudong, showing the fare before you confirm. Cars collect from the designated ride-hailing points near each arrivals hall, signposted from the exits, not from the taxi rank. You need the app, a payment method it accepts (international cards work in the international version) and mobile data. Fares are similar to taxis, with surge pricing at peaks.
Hotel shuttles
