Pudong to Hongqiao Airport Link Line

Until December 2024, changing between Shanghai’s two airports meant 90 minutes on Metro Line 2 or a long taxi. The Airport Link Line, a suburban railway with airport-style trains and luggage racks, cut that to under 40 minutes and connected the Disney resort zone to Pudong Airport on the way. For anyone connecting from an international arrival at Pudong to a domestic flight at Hongqiao or a high-speed train, it is now the default.

Route and stations

Seven stations were open at launch: Pudong Airport T1 and T2, Shanghai International Resort (for Disney), East Kangqiao, South Sanlin, Jinghong Road, Zhongchun Road and Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2, which shares the Hongqiao hub with Hongqiao railway station. The Pudong end is the station in the central area between Terminals 1 and 2, the same complex as Metro Line 2 and the Maglev; follow the Airport Link Line signs from either arrivals hall, about five to ten minutes on foot.

A further station at Shanghai East railway station, in Zhuqiao about 5 km from Terminal 1, is under construction as a hub for national and regional railways; it is scheduled to open in 2027 and will put a second high-speed station within minutes of the airport.

Fares, times and frequency

Fares are distance-based from 4 yuan, with the full journey between the airports 26 yuan. Trains run roughly every 15 minutes and the end-to-end time is under 40 minutes. Pay with a Shanghai Public Transportation Card, the Metro Daduhui app, Alipay or WeChat transport codes, or a single-journey ticket from the machines; foreign bank cards work in Alipay and WeChat.

Connecting at Hongqiao

Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 station is under the terminal, and Hongqiao railway station is in the same building complex a few minutes’ walk away. From here, high-speed trains reach Hangzhou in under an hour, Suzhou in half an hour and Nanjing in 70 to 90 minutes; Metro Lines 2, 10 and 17 continue into the city. Allow at least three hours between an international arrival at Pudong and a domestic departure at Hongqiao, and more if you have to collect bags and clear customs.

When to use Metro Line 2 instead

Line 2 also runs between the two airports, but takes 90 minutes with a change at Guanglan Road, and stops at every station through the centre. Hotels near the line

The Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong Airport and Dazhong Airport Hotel are a few minutes on foot from the Pudong Airport station, so an early Link Line departure needs no shuttle.
